砌陶郎. 羅偉

    羅偉(羅志偉),1975年出生高雄。不笨卻不愛念書,課本就是催眠曲。就讀美工科的導師 宋炳仁老師是位陶藝家,活潑生動的教學方式,激起羅偉對於美工與陶藝的興趣。求學期間,一場戶外教學,高雄" 岡山陶房"參觀,習陶之路在心中落下種子。

    叛逆是走向陶藝生涯的催生劑。退伍後,做陶習藝之心不變,母親的傳統觀念,認為美術是無法填飽肚子的,因此大力反對,為此拿了八字給算命仙算,說是非常不適合此行業,藉此想讓羅偉放棄陶藝。殊不知,越是反對,越是激起羅偉的心志,大年初五便跑去岡山陶房面試,民國85年的大年初六,開啟了羅偉的陶藝之旅。

    學徒制的習藝,不斷的操作,在重複的過程中,了解到土的特性,對於土的掌握以及陶藝的成型技術。岡山陶房的展場,時常展出許多國內外陶藝家的作品,羅偉對於陶的塑型.比例.美感,在無形中漸漸成長。

    岡山陶房命運多舛,忽起忽落,羅偉也在此多次進出,離開陶房的期間,在多位陶藝家的身邊當助手,自喻 "流浪拉坯手",這樣的經驗,在陶藝的旅程中增添了許多色彩,也在每位老師身邊學習到許多關於陶藝的"眉角"。

    從事護理工作的妻子,離開職場後,在羅偉的陶藝工作室一起創作,2015年成立了"羅偉.砌陶郎"陶藝空間。學徒時期,拉坯的速度與數量,是同事之間表現自己能力的方式。習陶的第四年,在一次的出窯,羅偉望著自己的作品許久,看到的是匠氣缺乏生命的作品。沉澱後發現,有感情的作品才有靈魂。於是他放慢腳步與速度,捨棄過度的技巧,多一些與泥土的對話,呈現出感動人心的作品。質樸內斂的天然木灰釉,自由奔放的志野釉,溫潤如玉的汝窯,在不同的作品詮釋著各自的角色。搬遷至三義的羅偉,更將三義紅土融入作品裡,藉由紅土的鐵礦,使溫潤的青瓷,更添生命的溫度。

    算命仙口中極不適合的工作,羅偉一直堅持地走。羅偉說,陶 是他的修行之路,雖不好走,卻仍要專注努力地持續往前行。陶(土)是他生命裡的DNA,形塑了羅偉這個砌陶郎,也形塑了他的作品。

The Jolly Potter, Lo Wei

Lo Wei (Lo, Chih-Wei), was born in Kaohsiung in 1975.  Not dull, but not keen on studying, to him, textbooks were lullabies.  His mentor in the Department of the Arts and Crafts at his school, Song Bingren, is a ceramist, whose lively teaching style inspired Lo Wei's interest in the art, crafts, and ceramics.  During the school years, a field trip to the “Gangshan Ceramics Studio” in Kaohsiung sowed in his heart the seed of embarking on a journey to learning ceramics.  And rebellion is the catalyst for choosing ceramics as his calling.  After finishing the military service, he still stayed firm in his determination to learn ceramics.  His mother, holding the traditional notion that art could not make ends meet, strongly opposed his idea.  She even took his Chinese horoscope to have a fortuneteller read his future, and was told that her son was highly unfit for making pottery as a career.  She was hoping that she could use what the fortuneteller said to talk Lo Wei out of doing ceramics.  And yet, the stronger the opposition, the more determined Lo Wei became.  Right on the 5th day of the lunar year in 1996, he went straight to the Gangshan Ceramics Studio for a job interview.  On the sixth day of that lunar year, Lo Wei’s ceramics journey began.  He worked and learned relentlessly under an apprenticeship.  Thru repetitive works, he gained an understanding of the characteristics and handling of the clay, and the forming techniques of the pottery.  The showroom at the Gangshan Ceramics Studio often exhibited works by many domestic and foreign ceramists.  Lo Wei gradually developed his own senses of the form, proportion, and aesthetics in ceramics.  With quite a few setbacks, the Gangshan Ceramics Studio suffered a fluctuating fate.  Lo Wei also quit and resumed his jobs there several times.  During the periods of quitting the Gangshan Ceramics Studio, he became an assistant to several ceramists and called himself the “roaming wheel-thrower”.  These experiences added more colors to his ceramics journey.  From each ceramist he also picked up quite a few “tips” on how to do ceramics.  His wife after leaving her job as a nurse, joined Lo Wei in his studio to create artworks together, and in 2015 launched the "Lo Wei. The Jolly Potter" Studio.  During his apprenticeship days, the way Lo Wei’s colleagues showed their abilities, was by the speed and quantity of products they could throw on a wheel.  In the fourth year of that apprenticeship, once after unloading, Lo Wei took a long look at his works that came out of the kiln.  What he saw was lifeless craftsmanship.  After some deep reflections, he realized that only those works filled with emotions had souls.  He thus slowed down his pace, ditched the technique overkills, had some more dialogues with his clay, and eventually produced works that moved one’s heart.  The simple and restrained natural wood ash glaze, the free-spirited Shino glaze, and the Ru Kiln glaze with its gentle, jade-like luster, each danced to its own interpretation on different works.  Lo Wei, after moving to Sanyi, further incorporated Sanyi’s red clay into his works.  Through the red clay’s iron content, his gently lustrous celadon wares gained further lively warmth.  Lo Wei persists in the calling that was declared utterly unfit by the fortuneteller.  Lo Wei said that ceramics is his path to spiritual enlightenment.  The journey is hard, he nevertheless single-mindedly plows ahead.  Clay is in his DNA, shaping Lo Wei the Jolly Potter, and also his works.
